We sit in one of the front booths at Bella Italia. Epathaâs dad brings us a basket of garlic bread. Heâs a short, round man with a black mustache. âOn the house,â he says. He bows to Mom, giving us an extra-good look at the strip of hair combed over the top of his shiny, nearly bald head.
Epatha comes out from the kitchen and slides into the booth beside me. âHi, Ms. Black,â she says to Mom.
âEpatha, do you remember Brendaâs cousin Tiffany?â Mom asks.
Epatha and Tiffany exchange unenthusiastic hellos. Tiffany looks Epatha up and down.
âI guess you canât wear nice clothes if you work in a restaurant, right?â asks Tiffany.
Epatha looks just fine, in a normal T-shirt and jeans. I can see her start to turn red, and Iâm wondering if this time she actually will pour orange soda down Tiffanyâs back. Fortunately, Epathaâs mom senses that something is up and strides over. Sheâs beautiful. She has glossy black hair and is wearing a green dress with lots of pink and orange flowers printed on it. She once told me the dress reminded her of the Puerto Rican rain forest near where she was born. She shoos Epatha back into the kitchen and takes our order. Before long weâre diving into a deep-dish veggie special. Mom pours us root beers from the pitcher Epathaâs mom brought us. We eat until weâre stuffed.
We say good-bye to Epatha and her family, then slowly walk the five blocks back to our apartment. The sun warms the back of my neck. Kids roller-skate in the park, taking advantage of the nice, late-summer weather. I feel sleepy and happy. Mom unlocks the apartment door, and we go inside.
âIâm going to take a nap,â I announce.
âGood idea,â yawns Mom. She heads into her room.
I open the door to my room, with Tiffany close on my heels.
Pookiepie is on my bed, grunting and chewing. In his mouth is whatâs left of Miss Camilla Freemanâs toeshoes.
